Besides Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations, the Scottish capital is a great place to visit during the run up to Christmas, and indeed to celebrate Christmas in.

Read on for some compelling reasons to get your hotel booked in Edinburgh this November and December…

Shop till you drop in the city’s Christmas markets

Christmas isn’t Christmas until you’ve sipped some warm mulled wine in the crisp winter air, chomped down a bratwurst sausage and picked up some presents from some not necessarily cheap craft stalls. Edinburgh has a number of Christmas markets to browse, namely the Scottish Market on St Andrew Square, the Children’s Market in Princes Street Gardens and the traditional European Market in Princes Street Gardens.

Experience the Street of Light

Set to be a truly spectacular and magical free experience for visitors to the city and residents alike, the Street of Light will see the installation of 60,000 lights, stretching the length of the Royal Mile. Beginning on St Andrews Day, this great visual treat will be accompanied by local choirs twice a day at 6:30 and 8:15PM.

Peek behind closed doors during the 24 Doors of Advent

When you open the doors on most advent calendars, all you get is a tiny chocolate and a generic festive picture. But during Edinburgh’s popular ’24 Doors of Advent’ you’ll get to actually walk through the doors and explore venues that are usually kept locked. This year’s doors include Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory, St Giles Cathedral, The Biscuit Factory and the City Chambers.

Light Night on 22nd November will see the switch on of Edinburgh’s Christmas lights, with a host of entertainments on the night. Schools and community groups are set to perform, followed by fireworks and the switching on of the Christmas tree lights by Scotland’s own Susan Boyle.

Have some festive fun on St Andrew Square

There will be a range of festive family fun on offer at St Andrews Square, including a large ice rink, a funfair and the ever-popular Spiegeltent with a great line-up of performances. There will also be a very special circus performance by Circa.
